“Melody Street” Creates Broadcast Magic for Kids with StudioGPU MachStudio Pro
Magical World Creators Rely on Real-time Non-linear 3D Workflow and Rendering to Successfully Mix Live Action with Animation
Los Angeles, CA – July 14, 2010 — StudioGPU announced today the creators of “Melody Street,” an innovative new broadcast show for children, are using StudioGPU MachStudio™ Pro software to streamline productivity and overcome the prohibitive creative costs and lengthy rendering times often associated with producing mixed-media broadcasts. The real-time non-linear 3D workflow and interactive rendering features in MachStudio Pro offer the “Melody Street” artists the speed and flexibility they need to deliver an impressive mix of animation and live-action footage on a regular basis.
Visit StudioGPU in the AMD Booth (# 301) during SIGGRAPH 2010 at the Los Angeles Convention Center, July 27-29 to see the real-time non-linear workflow benefits of MachStudio Pro on the latest ATI FirePro 3D workstation graphics accelerators.
“Melody Street” takes place in a magical world where animated musical instruments talk, sing and dance with live-action host Ethan Bortnick, a nine-year-old philanthropist and piano prodigy whose musical career began at age three. Bortnick’s ability to play any song by ear continues to garner him worldwide recognition, which he uses to help raise money for worthwhile charities such as the recent recording “We are the World 25 for Haiti.” Bortnick continues to captivate audiences around the world, appearing on popular television shows such as “Oprah,” “The Tonight Show,” and many others. To learn more about Ethan Bortnick, visit www.ethanbortnick.com.
The creative team at “Melody Street” relies on the advanced features of MachStudio Pro software, powered by ATI FirePro professional 3D graphics accelerators, to experience unprecedented creative control. With MachStudio Pro, the Melody Street artists can utilize the software’s robust real-time rendering and interactive creative tools, including complex lighting, caustics, camera, shaders, materials, ambient occlusion and color grading, to successfully mix 3D animation with live-action video. To maintain consistency throughout a production, artists are using MachStudio Pro to bypass the traditionally arduous process of continuously adjusting lights and colors and re-rendering scenes.
“Our mixed-media approach is a breakthrough in the broadcast market targeting three-to-seven year old kids,” says Director Guy Frenkel, one of three partners with Composers Gilad Benamram and Gil Feldman. “Using MachStudio Pro, we can easily integrate lighting, occlusion, and CG elements with the live-action video in real time, giving the show a look normally seen only in feature films. MachStudio Pro is essential to our efforts.”
“MachStudio Pro is similar to the revolutionary impact of Final Cut Pro for editing or Pro Tools for recording,” says “Melody Street” partner Gilad Benamram. “Now smaller studios and individuals can produce 3D animation at home that looks like something produced in a big studio.”
Instead of revamping its entire workflow, the Melody Street team incorporated MachStudio Pro into its existing Autodesk Maya and Apple Final Cut Pro pipeline, a solution that allows the artists to easily make adjustments on the fly as a project moves forward. “Our animation is quite complicated and it takes between half an hour and an hour per frame with traditional rendering,” explains Frenkel. “But when using MachStudio Pro, the rendering takes anywhere from a few seconds up to a minute for the most complicated shots. It would be crazy to do it any other way.”
The fluid workflow of MachStudio Pro also allows the ”Melody Street” team to envision composites ahead of time, even compositing directly in MachStudio Pro as needed. For example, a shadow that is cast from the video channel using an alpha channel can easily be combined in a 3D environment using MachStudio Pro.
To view a “Melody Street” broadcast and other innovative interactive educational activities with the characters from “Melody Street,” please visit melodystreet.com.

StudioGPU MachStudio Pro Streamlines Creation of First Playmobil Entertainment DVD for Sony Pictures Home Entertainment
Extra Large Technology Incorporates Real-time 3D Workflow and Rendering for Greater Flexibility and Faster Turnaround
LOS ANGELES, CA — December 9, 2009 — StudioGPU announced today that the CGI experts at Hollywood-based Extra Large Technology (XLT) turned to StudioGPU MachStudio™ Pro to accelerate the production of Playmobil: The Secret of Pirate Island DVD for Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. To create the first feature-length interactive animated adventure based on the popular Playmobil Pirates playsets, XLT relied on MachStudio Pro real-time 3D workflow and rendering technology to keep the innovative project on schedule and within budget.
Playmobil: The Secret of Pirate Island is based on the popular line of Playmobil Pirates playsets, which spring to life for the first time in this swashbuckling onscreen adventure. To deliver the 90-minute action adventure in less than 18 months, XLT artists broke free of conventional lighting and rendering processes for MachStudio Pro, a modern, streamlined program featuring a non-linear approach to 3D workflow. MachStudio Pro delivers GPU-accelerated real-time performance, allowing artists to quickly manipulate lights, cameras, and materials on the fly for greater control and flexibility within the animation pipeline.
“The Secret of Pirate Island licensed entertainment project is a first of its kind for Playmobil, and the company was very involved in every aspect of the look and feel of the entire project,” explains Charles Cohen, founder and CEO, XLT. “The real-time performance of MachStudio Pro allowed us to have greater flexibility and control over the lighting and rendering. The ability to make changes quickly and easily in film quality on the desktop with MachStudio Pro was critical in delivering the project on time and on budget.”
“Thanks to MachStudio Pro, we could see when there was too much bloom in one shot or not enough blur in another. We didn’t have to wait 40 minutes to see the glow on a treasure chest full of coins,” said Quinn Tetterton, executive vice president at XLT and creative producer overseeing the project. “It’s a great asset, because you can actually experiment during crunch time and get away with it. We could not have done The Secret of Pirate Island in the limited amount of time we had without MachStudio Pro.”
“MachStudio Pro basically skips the entire software rendering process,” says Zeth Dubois, CG supervisor at XLT. “Normally, lighting and rendering is a torturously long process. In a typical workflow, artists approximate lighting with their desktop software, make low-quality or regional test renders, then cross their fingers and send their files to a render farm, waiting hours or longer to see results.” Dubois continues, “But with MachStudio Pro, artists quickly get the feedback they need to make meaningful creative choices without getting bogged down in trying to figure out the technical issues.”
Children and their parents can experience the Pirates journey firsthand at www.sonywonder.com. Playmobil: The Secret of Pirate Island is now available at www.sonywonder.com, Amazon.com and other authorized Sony retailers.
XLT continues to expand its services to create animation for broadcast, features, on-line virtual worlds, advertising, mobile media and graphic novels. For more information about XLT, please visit www.extralargetech.com.

StudioGPU Ships MachStudio Pro - Supercharges 3D Workflow with Real-Time Finishing and Compositing
Renders Scenes Up to 900 Times Faster than Traditional Solutions - Reducing Times from Hours to Seconds
Los Angeles, CA, June 30, 2009 - StudioGPU announced today the immediate availability of MachStudio Pro™, a professional 3D workflow and rendering package created by artists for artists. MachStudio Pro offers a seamless way to create and interact with cinematic quality 3D objects and environments in a non-linear workspace by leveraging the horsepower of off-the-shelf professional graphics processing units (GPUs) to deliver real-time and near real-time workflow performance on a desktop workstation.
MachStudio Pro streamlines real-time 3D workflow, allowing artists to easily manage and interact with complex lighting, caustics, cameras, shaders, materials, ambient occlusion, and color grading. With MachStudio Pro, render times can be dramatically reduced from hours to minutes and minutes to seconds or sub-seconds. Comparable final scenes are consistently rendered with MachStudio Pro at rates of 500 to 900 times faster than traditional rendering packages. A complex 1.98 million polygon high-definition image, for example, renders in 14 seconds using MachStudio Pro while the same scene rendered with a traditional rendering package can take more than three hours to complete.
"Attempts at real-time workflow on workstations for the past 30 years have been futile—until now," said Dr. Jon Peddie, founder and CEO, Jon Peddie Research. "Designed by real studio pros at StudioGPU, the MachStudio Pro product provides a design environment that professional artists and technical directors should recognize immediately. This software is fast, and it can run even faster using GPUs for real-time or near real-time 3D workflow," Peddie emphasized. "MachStudio Pro could very well change the way things are done for real-time productivity and rendering on the desktop."
"MachStudio Pro is a core part of our previsualization pipeline," said Jericca Cleland, director and CEO of Twenty One Inc., a cross-media film development and preproduction studio in Vancouver, British Columbia. "It removes the stranglehold traditional CG lighting and rendering has placed on production and provides a way for directors, supervisors, and artists to creatively explore and render lighting on the fly, enabling significant increases in efficiency throughout the process," Cleland explained. "With the fluidity of lighting in MachStudio Pro, we remain visually focused instead of technically focused during lighting, which greatly enhances our ability to host interactive sessions and deliver quality results to our clients without losing control of the budget."
Powered by a real-time rendering engine, MachStudio Pro software fits into the creative pipeline after all 3D models are produced and provides lighting, cameras, materials, compositing and finishing capabilities. StudioGPU and AMD Enter Into Strategic Relationship
AMD Bolsters its Commitment to the Professional Graphics Workstation Market with Investment in Real-time 3D Workflow Innovation
Los Angeles, Calif., April 14, 2009 - StudioGPU, a pioneer in real-time 3D CG workflow solutions today announced it has entered into a strategic relationship with AMD (NYSE: AMD). Terms of the relationship between StudioGPU and AMD were not released.
The two companies plan to work in a collaborative effort to design an optimized hardware and software solution to deliver real-time 3D workflow advantages enabling customers to enjoy greatly reduced render times—from hours-to-minutes, and even minutes-to-seconds. AMD and StudioGPU are specifically dedicated to time and cost savings for digital content creation (DCC) artists and technical directors (TDs) working in the 3D games, visual effects, computer assisted design (CAD), pre-and-post design visualization, and the film and broadcast industries.
MachStudio™ Pro software from StudioGPU and the ATI FireGL™ V8650 3D graphics workstation accelerator card will be offered to customers as an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) bundle deal from StudioGPU.
Innovative Real-Time Graphics Processor Acceleration
The most expensive, time-consuming bottleneck of any 3D production workflow is inadequate processing power for digital content creation, editing, and rendering. When faced with extremely large 3D animation, games, and pre/post-visualization projects that have complex lighting, texture and visual elements—studios must either outsource to third-party render farm businesses, or invest heavily on in-house rendering assets. StudioGPU is changing the playing field. Artists and TDs will no longer have to rely on central processor unit (CPU)-based render farms. They will be able to leverage the power of the Graphics Processor Unit (GPU) in desktop workstations to easily make real-time lighting, content, and composition changes without losing their artistic vision.
“StudioGPU understands that artists and technical directors work with extremely high-resolution 3D imagery and are burdened with the spectre of long rendering time requirements that is both expensive and time consuming,” said David Koenig, President and CEO of StudioGPU. “Today we are excited to announce our relationship with AMD to leverage the dizzying graphics horsepower of the ATI FireGL V8650 card along with our innovative real-time workflow and rendering technology in MachStudio Pro. Together—this combination is sure to empower any size production facility to realize screaming real-time performance and meet production deadlines on time and on budget.”
“AMD is the only company in a position to tap into the combined processing power of today’s CPUs and GPUs to deliver superior workstation solutions. Our new technology partnership with StudioGPU demonstrates our shared commitment to delivering technology that optimizes the speed and effectiveness of creating high-quality visualizations for everything from animation, film effects and game development to architecture and product design,” said Dirk Meyer, AMD CEO. “The performance workstation market is a key business opportunity for AMD and our customers, and together with StudioGPU, we aim to bring solutions to market that deliver superior value without breaking cost-conscious production and technology budgets.”
“AMD is committed to innovations that deliver solid value to our customers in the professional graphics market,” said Rick Bergman, Senior Vice-President and General Manager, Graphics Product Group, AMD. “The combination of the StudioGPU software and the ATI FirePro graphics accelerator is designed to enable our customers to deliver exciting content in record time.”
